About Newburyport
The city of Newburyport, located at the mouth of the Merrimac River and 30 miles north of Boston, has a population of 16,317 residents. The town is commuter friendly with its last stop from Boston arriving here. This 19th century seaport has a large number of spacious Federalist older homes. Newburyport is a very small and quaint city with a strong tourist center that draws people to see its restored historic granite, brick, and cobblestone neighborhoods as well as its shopping town center that has many unique small retail stores. The museums and historical homes are also a draw for tourists. A few decades ago an industrial park was built that houses small diversified industries. Newburyport also became the first to have a harbor plan and today it has a great boardwalk and waterfront park.
This town has lots of maritime trade history with its fishing industry, as well as the first Coast Guard was born here, and shipbuilding was prevalent in the 1800's in this town. Plum Island, part of Newburyport and Newbury is an 11 mile long barrier island that offers sandy beaches, wildlife refuge, home to 800 species of birds, plants, and animals. Newburyport has an old world charm to it and that is what has attracted residents and tourists alike to come here.
