About Burlington

Burlington’s offerings are one of the best kept secrets around!  A town that cares about it’s residents, Burlington is located 13 Miles Northwest of Boston and has one of the lowest tax rates in the commonwealth.  Formed in 1799, Burlington is sited on the watersheds of the Ipswich, Mystic and Shawsheen Rivers. For most of its history, it was almost entirely agricultural, but between 1955 and 1965, became the fastest growing town in the state.  In one five year period its population tripled as residential and commercial retail development exploded creating the town’s present character  Burlington’s residential population is 24,320 or 2,047/sq. mile with an area of 11.88 square miles (7,577 Acres).  Burlington’s daytime population increases to approximately 150,000.  Burlington’s per capita income is $30,372; $75,240 median household (Federal Census) and a tax rate of $9.60 residential; $26.30 commercial.

Burlington boasts four elementary schools (K-5), one middle school (6-8), one high school, and one regional technical high school (Billerica), with a per pupil expenditure of $12,805 (2007).  Health care facilities are Lahey Clinic and Harvard Community Health Center.  Burlington’s 29,000-sq. ft. library was constructed in 1994 and has an excellent, affordable recreation department. Unlike other towns, Burlington doesn’t charge for school sports or busing.  Houses of Worship include nine Protestant, two Catholic, one Jewish, one Jehovah Witness, and one Islamic.  Shopping and Restaurants include the Burlington Mall, Middlesex Commons, Crossroads, Vine Brook Shopping Plazas, and Wayside Commons. Numerous smaller shopping plazas and independent shops, as well as fine and casual dining. Grocery Stores: DeMoulas, Roche Bros., Shaws and Trader Joe’s.
